ARCHIVED PREDICTION — Original selection: Over 2.5 Match Goals (Single Bet)

Some football matches are made for tactical masterclasses, defensive discipline and managers congratulating themselves on a beautifully organised 0-0.

This wasn't the sort of Saturday afternoon Numbers & Odds was hoping for.

Coventry welcomed Sunderland to the Coventry Building Society Arena, and we weren't particularly interested in who would take home the three points.

We wanted three goals. Minimum.

Two clubs with a bit of history

These two aren't exactly strangers.

Their rivalry stretches back decades, with plenty of drama, controversy and bad blood along the way.

And now they were meeting on the Premier League stage, where every defensive mistake could become a very expensive one.

The previous five head-to-head meetings had been evenly contested, with two wins apiece and one draw.

So picking a winner? You could keep that headache.

We were looking at the goalposts instead.

Why we liked Over 2.5 Goals

Here's the beauty of this market.

Coventry didn't have to win. Sunderland didn't have to win. Neither team even needed to play particularly well.

We just needed the ball in the net three times.

A 2-1 home victory? Lovely.

A 1-2 away victory? Equally lovely.

A chaotic 2-2 draw with both managers looking ready to throw their water bottles into the stands?

Even better!

The interesting thing about this fixture was that neither side could afford to approach Premier League football believing a single goal would always be enough.

One moment of defensive madness, an early goal or a set-piece mistake could completely change the afternoon.

And once a game opens up, goals have a habit of arriving in bunches.

The Numbers & Odds verdict

SINGLE BET: OVER 2.5 TOTAL MATCH GOALS

Our preferred scoreline was 2-1, although we wouldn't have complained if both teams decided defending was optional and served up a five-goal thriller.

Was it guaranteed? Of course not. Football has a wonderful habit of making fools of anyone who thinks they've cracked it.

But this was where we planted our flag for Saturday.

Three goals. Ninety minutes. That was the assignment.
